It is a physical connection in which data travels from one computer to another. It can be divided in two main categories.
Guided Media-(Wires, Cables)
Unguided Media-
(Radio , Microwave, Satellite , infrared) etc.
Wires
Twisted Pair Cables
It is a pair of insulated conductors that are twisted together. It provide better resistance from false noise signals. There are two types of twisted pair cables.
- Shielded twisted pair
- Unshielded twisted pair
These cables are not costly , and cover less range and speed is 100 Mbps.
Coaxial Cables
It is a round shape cable in which there there is a main conductor wire called inner conductor which is covered with thick plastic insulation of a solid plastic. It is mostly used in Cable TV. It can be used over a distance of about 1 KM and can achieve a transfer rate of up to 100 mbps .there are two types of coaxial cable.
- Thicknet(10Base5)
- Thinnet (10Base2)
Fibre-Optic cable
It carries signal form of light in a glass or plastic cable. It consist of a glass or plastic core surrounded by a cladding of a similar material .
There are two types of fiber optical cables.
- Single Mode Fiber Optics(SMF)
- MultiMode Fiber Optics(MMF)
